STOP HS2 Update - please write to your MP and sign the new petition

PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE - WE’VE GOT IT, BUT WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!
Dear Stop HS2 Supporter,

At the last General Election, David Cameron promised that any petition getting over 100,000 signatures would get a debate in Parliament. With your help, we got over well over the 100,000 signatures between the paper petition and the go-petition site.
However, when the Government relaunched their e-petition site in August - 15 months after the election - we thought we'd need to start again with that petition as well.  But a few days ago the news broke that the committee that handles these things has agreed to have a debate on Thursday 13th October!

We do still need you to sign the new Government e-petition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/353, as it will be seen by MPs as a test of how strong opinion is against HS2. The great news is that if everyone getting this email signs the petition and gets just ONE other person to sign who hasn’t already, we are over the 100,000 mark, just like that. HS2 is still seen very much as a minor issue and this would help change that.

Only two petitions so far; one about the recent riots and one about the Hillsborough Disaster which has been ingrained on the national consciousness for 22 years have so far got the 100,000. If we can do it, it puts the campaign against HS2 firmly in the mainstream. We are currently ranked 13th out of over 7,000 petitions on the new e-petition website.

WRITE TO YOUR MP
If we are going to get HS2 stopped, we also need as many people as possible writing to their MP.

Please forward this email to your contacts, preferably with a personal plea from you at the top explaining why stopping HS2 is such an important issue to you, and please ask them to contact their MP about HS2. We have made this really easy with a tool available at www.highspeedrail.org.uk. Please do everything you can to promote this, whether by email, writing to your local paper, ringing your friends, talking to people in the street, posting the link on your social media profile or via twitter. The public consultation may be over, but the fight still has a long way to go, and we need you to do your bit!

OTHER NEWS;
It’s party conference season and Stop HS2 campaigners are taking our arguments directly to the politicians. We've been to the LibDems, Plaid Cymru, Green and UKIP conferences (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NaYnBjyimw) before campaigners go on the Labour, Conservative and SNP up to the middle of October.

We’ve also been touring the country on the ‘Great White Elephant Hunt’, taking Ellie, our 10 foot inflatable white elephant around Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire to raise awareness of what HS2 means (see pictures and videos on our Facebook Page and YouTube Channel, via the links at www.stophs2.org). This is on top of all the usual press coverage we have been getting for the cause. All of it so far has been a great success, but there is only one problem, when we’ve done all of the above, we will have run out of money.

Occasionally, Stop HS2 gets funds from some local action groups towards specific projects, however it is very rare that these donations actually  cover the cost of a specific project. As the national campaigning organisation, we rely on direct donations from the public and currently all the work Stop HS2 does is done by volunteers. There are lots of ways to donate, by post, standing order or paypal and you can also give us money via your regular online shopping or simply using a search engine. Whatever appeals to you, we need you to help. Please go to www.stophs2.org and click on the ‘Send us some money’ link for details.

Don’t forget there are daily updates and links to the latest HS2 news on our website at www.stophs2.org and you can follow us on www.twitter.com at @stophs2 and @joerukin. You can also go onto our regular mailing list via the link at www.stophs2.org.

The fight is still on and it’s just hotting up!
